Healthy Bites: Nutrition for Children Session 1

This course will empower early care and education programs to improve the quality of the meals and snacks served by including foods recommended for proper growth and development for children ages 1 through 12.
o Identify a variety of fruits and vegetables and list ways to prepare a variety of fruits and vegetables without added sugar, fat and salt.
o Identify the key areas on a food label to determine if a grain product is a whole grain and low in sugar, list ways to add a variety of whole grain, low sugar products in their menu, and list ideas to encourage children to eat more and a variety of whole grains.
o Identify lean meats and meat alternates to substitute for processed and high fat protein foods on their menu and list methods for preparing meat and meat alternates with less sodium, less fat and/or without fat.
o Identify the best beverage choices for children to keep them hydrated and healthy.
o List ways to encourage children to eat more and a variety of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean meats and meat alternates and to drink low-fat milk, less juice and more water throughout the day.
o Identify ways to inform parents on how to incorporate more and variety of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean meats and meat alternates and on how to make and encourage the best choices in beverages at home.
This is Session 1 of a 2 part training. Both sessions are required, 2nd Session is 7/20/2021.
